Dandruff and Scalp Conditions
Dandruff is a common scalp disorder which affects individuals of any age or origin. It is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. A small amount of flaking is normal and common but some people experience an unusually large amount of flaking which can be accompanied by redness, irritation and itchiness of the scalp.
Scalp psoriasis similarly causes flaking of the scalp but can be more severe than dandruff and cause the sufferer huge embarrassment.
Treatment is usually with tar based or zinc containing shampoos. Certain anti-fungals, notably ketoconazole which is contained in Nizoral, can be used in shampoos which work by controlling the natural skin fungal population which can cause dandruff and other scalp conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis (dry itching scalp).
