Heartburn and Indigestion
Indigestion and heartburn are often terms that are used interchangably and although they have similar causes and in some cases similar treatments they are not the same thing.
Indigestion is a feeling of fullness, discomfort and pain in the upper abdomen and chest. The feeling of fullness and bloating can be accompanied by belching and a feeling of nausea.
Heartburn starts as a burning pain usually in the chest behind the breastbone and progresses to nausea, burping and flatulence.
Both are common problems and can be treated safely with over the conter medications. However if other symptoms are present such as unplanned weight loss, severe pain or indegestion developing in anyone over the age of 45 all need further investigation by you doctor. Immediate medical help should be obtained if the patient vomits fresh blood or vomit contains specks of fresh blood or blood that looks like coffee grounds.
